treasure hunting!

TJMaxx....I couldn't agree more...can go in with $20 and come out with something fun!  On my last excursion to the Maxx, I headed directly to the clearance aisle of housewares and found two chambray, downfillled Ralph Lauren accent pillows for $12 each....they look awesome on Peter's bed!  I always find $1.99 RL sale washcloths and usually walk out with a few picture frames as well.  I've also built up a nice supply of Le Creuset bakeware and cookware from the clearance aisle.  It usually doesn't work to go in with a particular item in mind...it's best to head in with an open mind and check out the clearance stuff first.  Another good buy there is socks...athletic to Hue.

My FAVORITE treasure hunting is at antique stores...my heart starts racing as I head in the door because you never know what you're going to find!!!  Last week when I was in La Crosse for a meeting, I stopped by a great find in Sparta...just off the interstate...Sparta's New and Used (my friend Kelly sells some of her antiques there).  "New" means junk, but "Used" translated into some great antique deals!  Same strategy as TJ Maxx...look for the stalls with "40% off everything" and keep an open mind.  Because times are tough and people aren't spending on antiques, there's a lot great deals.  I spent $33 and walked out with three glass cakeplates...one was green depression glass....marked down 50% off then another 40%....it was literally a steal!  I also got an 1950's Heileman Old Style bar tray (fun for summer on the porch!), two vintage kitchen towels and a 1 pint milk bottle.  All for $33!!!   The glass cake plates and the milk bottles are perfect for gifts...bake a cake and put it on the gorgeous plate...a wonderful/thoughtful gift!  Milk bottles and Ball Mason jars are perfect vases for garden flowers in the summer.

The BEST antiquing is in Viroqua and Westby....I love that part of WI...gorgeous scenery and the nicest people.  Kelly introduced me to a HUGE antique find at an old tobacco factory in Viroqua.  No heat so it's only open April - Oct.....it's amazing!!!!!  It's full of endless finds....the last time I was there I bought a 1927, handblown cakeplate on a stand...it's kind of slanted because it's hand blown...I LOVE it.  It was marked down to $15.  I love painted tin trays too...found a gorgeous one there with lemons on it.

Could go on forever...we need to go on an antique excursion this summer when we're in La Crosse...I'll take you to my favorite places along Hwy. 14....so beautiful and so much fun!

ROOM by Emma Donoghue

Magnificent book.  I've never read anything like it.  Every mother should read it.  It's our worst fears and our greatest hopes all in one.  Read it.

One quote that will stay with me is "I didn't forget a day of you either."  Moms don't forget.

Heidi

which way...

...do I want it to go here in WI?  Honestly, that is a hard question.  Chris is not in a union. There's only one way this will end...and that is the Governor will have passed his budget exactly as he wrote it...he has the majority and that's that.  There are no Republicans in the Senate offering any amendments.  It's a party line vote and Republicans rule in WI now.

We have a budget disaster on our hands and times are tough.  We can't keep spending or we'll go bankrupt.  What I do KNOW is that I've never seen our state more divided.  It's HOW it's being done that I disagree with...it did not need to be this way.  Neighbors are literally not speaking to one another over this.  There are people I avoid talking to...it's PERSONAL to everyone because everyone has a side and an agenda.  I've never heard more "me me me" talk in my life...everyone has a story about getting the raw end of the deal.

When times are tough, you see a person's true character.  We've learned a lot about our elected leaders these past few weeks.  I keep thinking that Grandpa Milo would be so disappointed in the behavior of our leaders.

Life goes on....they'll pass the budget and it will soon be law and everyone will adjust again.  Unfortunately, the climate might be changed/damaged for a long time.

Need to start a new book

I know we have talked about books, and you are the queen of reading. I really need to go get a book, and The Room sounds great. I do miss my book club. I was one of the members who read the books. The way this winter is dragging on and on....a book might be just the thing I need.
love, K:)

Unions

I was talking to a coworker about unions and what is going in WI. He has worked for the state for 35 years. He said he started when there was no union. So he has seen both sides. He said, without the union, they could fire you, just because they wanted to, and they did. Now you have to have documentation and a reason. It may take more time, but you can still fire someone for not doing there job. I have been witness to that at work.

The problem comes when the union act like the mafia. They think they can bully. Just be descent, and act appropriately. They are suppose to be there for the workers, not just to make themselves look good. The worst thing I got in the mail this year before election day, was a voting card from my union. It listed all of the democrats I should vote for in the election. I thought that was pathetic.
I hope it goes the way you and Chris want it to go. It is tough. A lot of opinions, and a lot of idiots.
love, K:)

a first....

Politics is my bread and butter.  Never have I been so embarassed and ashamed of my political party.  Can't figure out the lack of leadership being shown.  It's slash and burn with both guns a blazin!  The absolute nastiness is disgusting and offensive.  Wisconsin citizens are being pitted against eachother....everyone is taking a side.  It doesn't have to be this way.  I hope and pray that some Senators do what is right.  Heidi

Whatcha reading???

Had my wonderful book group last night....we read The Great Gatsby...classic/tragic/wonderful story.  I LOVE reading...still thinking about Cutting for Stone...right up there on my list with Crossing to Safety, 1,000 White Women , Little Bee and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

On our list for the next three months:

Room: A Novel

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

Happy reading!  Heidi

there's a season for everything!

As much as I can't imagine our house without Emma in it every single day (or Peter, but I get three more years with him!), it's just life.  Earlier this year I had much more anxiety about the college process starting, but now that we're in the search, in the thick of ACT and SAT, NHS, etc, it's okay.  It's our JOB as parents to make them independent.  I think Chris and I succeeded at that - she is independent and she's happy!

Next year will be a year of "lasts"...last first day of school (at home)...last dance...last swim meet, etc., but I intend to savor every single minute of it!  And, I am so excited to see where she will land!  I'm not worried about her.  I admire her and I'll always be there for her.  You'll see, by next year, you'll be more excited than anxious about the process with Evan.  By the time Peter goes and, alas, Lily, it will be easier.  The older ones pave the way.

I'm talking brave now...ha!  You and Mom may need to shovel me off the floor when she actually leaves...

I'm proud of all of our kids.  Evan has found his calling with the ROTC...very decorated, very proud.  Peter keeps surprising us all the time...from joining swim team to still being the sweet cuddly family boy that he is...hugs/loves us in public any time!  Lily is having a great year....has come a long way, baby!!!  Sissy, we are blessed.

Auntie Sarah

Sarah Ferguson, Duchess ofI believe Auntie Sarah got caught in a scheme to basically steal money from her ex-hubby, Will's Uncle.  I wouldn't invite her either.  I doubt she is a big part of Will's life and most likely Kate hasn't met her...but more importantly, it's their wedding.  They are in charge of the guest list or they've put someone in charge of their guest list.  Also, she's not "blood."  And we know ALL about the importance of being a "blood relative"...;)...Heidi

Snubbed!

I heard today that Obama got snubbed from the royal wedding. Made me chuckle. Sarah Ferguson also got snubbed, oh Charles get over yourself. She should be invited. Weren't you having an affair and being unfaithful......hhhmmm.

College Bound...well almost...

Do you ever just stop and think......it can't be true. Our oldest's will be 17 this year. It is crazy. Sometimes I cry, sometimes it makes me proud. It really is true, time goes so fast! It seems like yesterday they were wearing their matching pumpkin costumes, and couldn't sit up yet.

For you, I have extra anxiety. One more year for Emma. I guess Evan's preschool teacher gave me a year, when she held Evan back. One extra year. One more year to think about how much I will miss him, not being with us everday....ok, I will stop....

I am so proud of Emma. She is so smart, and has also done such a great job. She is a leader and an independent. I can't wait for her to start that journey, and to hear all about it. She will love it, and you will miss her, but you will be so proud watching her become a woman!

I know it's over a year away before she has to go.....but her college choice will be coming soon! How exciting! She will make you even prouder!

Dumped On!

I feel like 13 inches is the weight of a ton! The people who were crabby before just became depressed. You are so lucky to have missed this one in Madison. Although it might have sent some of the protesters home.

I was feeling spring....seeing grass...dreaming of my sandals. But, we know anything can happen, all the way through March. The worst part is this week is going to be cold again, no chance of melting any of it.

I am sad to see the uproar coming out of Madison for your sake. I hope everything will be resolved soon. I am upset for Chris. I know as a state employee, you don't have a lot of choices. But I hope it comes out ok for him.

Best movie on a snowy, sunny, holiday.....Little Woman. Lily turned it on a little bit ago. I love it, and I know it is one of Emma's favorites. And we know if it is one of Emma's favorites, it is one of Lily's favorites! :) It makes me think of GJ. Miss having her around.

I am going to go get those daffodils this week....a little yellow on the table is what I need! Grab a couple bunnies from a bin, and we are ready! I have taken down the last of Christmas. I am so tired of red. I love it, but I like to see it go. I am continuing to make my lists for spring and summer. Lots to do....can't wait!

Yesterday in Wisconsin...

Woke up to freezing rain.  Then snow.  Then just rain.  Then ice pellets.  Rain again.  Finishing off with a bit of snow.  GRATEFUL we only have less than 1 in. of snow on the ground....the forecast had been 9-12!

Today it's just gray and slushy.

Everyone in this state is cranky....because we're divided by our government.  Public v. Private employees.  It's also been made a Democrat v. Republican thing....which is interesting seeing as not all public sector employees are Dems and not all private sector employees are Republicans.  We couldn't be more divided and more angry at one another.  It's horrible.

This past week has been hugely eye opening for me.  Both sides villifying the other side.  Lies and twisting the truth on both sides as well.  Couldn't be less proud of our state.

spring is in the air!

Wonderful 45 minute walk with George today...
Clear sidewalks.
Grass visible everywhere.
Birds chirping.
No gloves.
No boots.
Blue sky.
Sun shining!

Mean and spiteful

I agree, lots of mean spirits out there...I'm always surprised when someone is truly nice or kind...how sad is that?!  With the economy the way it is, I think most people have a very sad attitude of "screw everyone else."  I see it all the time.  Pretty pathetic way to live.  Think kindness.  You and I can always count on eachother!!!  Gotta keep laughing and striving!

Just like the country being divided by our President, more than it ever has in the past, we've got a Governor doing the same thing here in Wisconsin...pitting the private sector and the public sector against eachother when it comes to filling in the massive budget debt that previous legislators and governors spent us into!!!  We all pay the same taxes.  Don't get me started on that.  It comes down to personal choice.  If you are in the private sector, you chose that....if you're in the public sector, you chose that...there are pros and cons to both, but don't rip on the public sector when times are tough.  They have pay freezes and furlough days already...pulling their "fair share."  Remember, when times are awesome, there are no bonuses in the public sector and you don't see protestors saying they deserve one!

Onto a better topic, the employees at Trader Joe's know me so well because it's a block from E & P's school...so it's very easy for me to swing by on an almost daily basis!  They've got their $1.49 bunch of daffodils there now!!!  Three bunches in a vase look bountiful!!

Talked with Emma's h.s. counselor yesterday...very insightful.  We will be meeting to discuss the college process...but, I encourage you to talk to Evan's counselor before Junior year.  She had so many great insights for me and calmed all nerves.   My goal is to decrease Emma's pressure, not increase it through this maze of applications, tests, etc.  Everything always works out in the end.

Miss you Sissy, wish we could do a weekend soon....we'll be at Emma's regional meet all weekend!

TJ MAXX

I remember a time when you and Mom talked about TJ MAXX. I had never been there, and didn't know what I was missing. Until, a couple of years ago. Like you said, if you have a 1/2 hour, and $20, TJ MAXX is the best destination.
I went in there over the weekend and bought a new pot for my newly painted bathroom for $4.00. It's a total find! Then went to Home Depot and bought a tropical plant for $4.00, voila!

They have the best one of kinds too. Things that will work, if you use your inner designer. Mix it up...don't be so matchy matchy...right! ? Next purchase...towels.

Minnesota...not so nice

Hay sissy, I am here!
I have to say this week is beautiful, 40's, but the weeks leading up to this have brought many hard, cold nights. And with that, crabby, and not so nice Minnesotans. I think it is mostly because people are cold, and sick of it, but I was started to become very annoyed.

Sitting in the line at Walgreens drive up pharamacy window, waiting my turn patiently....when the next car, in the other lane, who by the way got there a good 10 minutes after me, is asked "Were you next"? She replies, "Well, we both were here....."  If looks could kill....she'd be 6 feet under.

I am trying like heck to stay true to our News Years resolution of being NICE, but it has been tough!  Everyone is in a hurry! I think we need an early spring.....we need it bad. Yes, we know the groundhog says that will be true, but if it isn't, how would a groundhog coat look next winter??

On another note.....I have not tried that spread at Trader Joes. But, I do love any of their hummus ones. I am sorry to say sissy, if I have a 1/2 hour, I am making a trip to Target, and not Trader Joes.  The organic shampoo just doesn't cut it! LOL.  You and Trader Joes....you should be on their payroll!

I have a new tradition....Sunday Night Dinner. I admit, we rarely sit at the dinner table together. So, I thought we need to have at least one meal, at the table, no excuses. Lily picked mashed potatos as her choice. Since, we could not have our first Sunday Night Dinner of mashed potatos, I also made chicken. Each week we will rotate, and someone will pick the meal of the night, of course I have the pleasure of cooking it, but the choice will be different each week. TRADITIONS....start one, or add one.
Love, K:)

Yummiest dip/spread!

This comes in a little container in the refrigerator section...best if warmed up.  I zap it in the microwave and spread it on anything...veggies, crackers, on top of chicken.  It is SO GOOD!  Heidi

MISSING...KLKS

We're not dishing if you're not writing...get back on here Sista!

YUCK

Based on the previous post, we had to purchase a new oven...they delivered it today.  A nice GE in white (!).

Does anyone ever pull their stove out and clean (I do pull the refrigerator out once/year)?  I never did - probably because it's hooked up to a gas line.  Mine had not moved in 11 years.  This is what we found:

- about 25 dog biscuits
- fishing lures
- numerous pens and pencils
- 85 cents
- a frisbee!
- about a pound of dog and cat hair...disgusting!

grateful

...that I called my local gas and electric company to come out today....gas issue with my oven and the ignitor...so grateful our home did not explode.

While on the phone with MG&E this am..."Mrs. Green, from what you're telling me, the prompts on my screen are saying you need to evacuate your home immediatedly...I'll stay on the phone with you...grab your coat, purse and animals if you have them and get into you car and wait for us to arrive on your driveway."

Time for a new oven.  All is well and safe.

Strangely enough I did exactly what she said...not for a second did I stop to grab any thing, only my purse, George and Charlie.  Heidi

my list

LISTS!   They control my life...I have my daily list and my monthly list.  I love being able to cross items off my list.  I had a huge list before Christmas...because you and yours were visiting so I did some project cleaning and organizing then, but alas, the list just keeps on growing.  On my list to accomplish in Feb...

1.  Organize kids' closets again...it's an on-going battle.

2.  Organize my jewelry...it's in about four different location (drawers, jewelry box, etc).  I just bought some cool hanging organizers from TJMaxx...with tons of little zipped pockets on both sides...tons of room for my jewelry and some of Granny Bernice's and Grandma Bea's...

3.  #2 leads to #3...organizing my closet.  It's an awesome walk in closet for an old house...even has a window...it's in pretty good shape, but it could be better.

4.  Organize my desk and office again...another on-going project.  Could/will be great!

5.  Last but not least, finish putting away the Christmas crap...while chucking stuff we never use anymore!

That will keep me occupied for February....basement and kitchen will be on March's list.
