Grateful...

Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm the only one up (since 5 of course...one day I will learn to sleep in) and just finished the fat paper chock full of ads.  I'm tempted to boycott any business (for my Christmas shopping over the next month) that is open today.  I think it's wrong.  Drinking my coffee, making a pie, doing laundry (two college kids home = oodles of laundry) and strategizing the day!  The pressure is off because this year it's the four of us.  Emma and Peter are thrilled to be home.  Making it all....turkey, gravy, great grandma's stuffing, green bean casserole, rolls, mashed potatoes, etc...while watching the Macy's Day parade!

Butler basketball is on the agenda and possibly a movie later...after a nice, long walk!

Grateful for so much in 2014, but these are the highlights:

- Happy that we cherished every moment of George's last months.  We knew it was coming and we didn't waste a minute....endless kisses and snuggles.  Great naps next to him and always reminding him that he was the best thing in our lives.  We miss him so much.

- Emma just keeps loving her life at Butler.  She's captain of the swim team and is a true leader.  She just keeps getting faster and it's an absolute pleasure to watch her swim.  Can't believe she's halfway through her junior year.  Can't wait to see what her future holds!

- Peter has been amazing to watch/hear about his freshman year at Purdue.  He loves his school and has challenged himself to try new things.  ROTC has been challenging, but he's risen to it.  He's joined clubs (skeet, College Republicans, Cause for Paws...), has a great group of friends and a fantastic roommate, "Lance."  We are so proud of the man he is becoming.

- Happy that the family is overall doing well.  Happy for Lily and Evan...both doing well!!!  Happy that we'll be in Florida to visit Mom and Dad after the holidays.

- Really grateful for Chris.  His complete dedication and devotion to our family is what makes it all so enjoyable.  He doesn't blink at driving back and forth to IN because it means being with his favorite people in the world!

- Grateful for my position with the Medical Society too.  The best job I've ever had!!!  NO STRESS.

Have a wonderful day Sissy and hug and kiss S, E and L for me.  We miss you and wish you were here!

xoxo, H.

silver bells...

Love the crafting ideas, Sissy!  BUT...the silver bells.

Where do I begin...

1.  Polish the damn balls, people!  They are SILVER and expensive and shouldn't look like poop.

2.  String does not do these balls justice.  Use a thick velvet or grosgrain ribbon.

3.  These balls are special so I agree that they shouldn't just randomly go on the tree.  I like to put mine (polished) in a trifle bowl with a red grosgrain ribbon running through them.  Will post a pic when I do it in early December!

THANKS MOM FOR OUR SILVER BALLS...such a treasure!!  xo, H.

6. Silver Bells * we have the ornaments we just need to string them and hang

the pressure

I have heard stories like that before regarding top students not being able to handle college, and come home. It is really sad, but there are many factors for sure. The pressure parents put on their kids is huge, but some pressure is good. I am sure those parents of Peters classmate thought they were doing the right thing.

I remember putting pressure on Evan when he was little. Flashcards etc. But I think if I wouldn't have done that he wouldn't have done as well in grade school, or High School. There is definitely a fine line. I didn't pressure him as much in High School, and I think he had trouble prioritizing and putting the effort in. He did well, but I know he was capable of even more.

It is best to let them figure things out. Emma will probably change her mind again, its ok. I think we as parents look at other factors. Get a job that makes money, and something that makes you happy. It's all about the money, really. Huge students loans, the cost of living etc. I hope they all find something they love, but you need to make money. I am proud of Peter for giving ROTC a chance. I think it is perfect for him, he loves all that stuff. If he decides its not, he will figure out something else. I hope Evan figures out what he wants, soon. It changes monthly right now!!

I feel sorry for those kids. The pressure is of moving away, going to college and everything is new is huge. It's almost like a nervous breakdown I bet. Knowing how disappointed the parents would be, would make it 100 times worse. That kid will regret it someday, we always do.

the bling and a sad story...

I am kind of suprised at myself, but I am loving the bling for the cell phone, Sissy.  I think I need that because it just made me smile.  It's tempting to buy the kit because it's just so perfect AND it's probably going to adhere well.  So, Santa, make a note and add it to my list ;)!

Heard a sad story yesterday.  A boy from Peter's graduating h.s. class called his parents a week ago and said "I've officially withdrawn from school and I'm coming home."  This is a kid who was top of the class and was enrolled at Notre Dame.  He was definitely pushed and expected to do very well (just like his sister in Emma's class and his siblings under him) but he definitely came from a loving family.  When I think of the family, I think of VERY high strung, VERY competitive and VERY focused.  The Mom's full time job is to make sure her kids ARE THE BEST.  She definitely thinks she is mothering to the best of her ability. It made me really sad though because all I could think of how very sad and upset he must have been to make that decision.  I can't imagine the pressue he was under.

There is such a fine line in parenting.  Wanting "what is best" and letting them "find their way."  Emma is definitely finding her way, but I believe it's also what is best.  We're here to advise, but she is figuring it out.  As much as she thought about medical school her freshman year, she KNOWS now that is not the path she is on at the moment.  It might change but she pulled herself off of that fast, stressed, intense track last semester.  It was just too much for her with her commitment to her swimming.  I think it was a great decision.  I think her future is wide open and it's exciting to see where she'll head!

I've thought a lot about Evan this year while Peter is in his first year of college and Army ROTC.  Evan knew from the get go that he did not want to go through with ROTC even though he was pretty certain about it when he signed up.  From what you've told me, Evan is happy on his new path.  Evan in radio?!  It's actually just perfect!  Grandpa Milo is beaming.

We've weathered some highs and lows with this new Peter adventure/commitment.  There were a few times when I thought he could go either way.  Nothing is certain - even now- but I think he's happy with his commitment.  However, I think we've learned to never say never.  As I said to someone at a breakfast the other day, when they asked how the empty nest is, we're still parenting every day...talking, listening and praying.  Peter's path is wide open too and we're just here to hear about it and be there to provide love and support!

The boy who withdrew from Notre Dame is pretty brave in my opinion.  He could have stayed and failed.  Or had a nervous breakdown.  Or worse.  I'm definitely saying prayers for him.  xo, H.

Thursday is tip or treat day...sissy I will count your lotion as a great tip or treast yesterday! I am late with it, but here my treat for today...

too early

Winter came early in MN. Not happy about it, but decided to let my anger go. There is nothing I can do about it, so who cares! The cold weather that came along with it I think is the worst part of it. (sorry about the backyard scene...my backyard is not attractive)
Yesterday I baked bread too sissy, mine was cranberry bread. So good! I was off for the holiday, so nice to be home alone to chill. (literally :)) I debated on whether to start putting Christmas decorations up, but then decided not to. Leaving my orange for awhile. Are you still in fall mode or Christmas mode sissy...?

Today is just clicking along...

Good night's sleep and a great day to get stuff done....lots of work done this a.m., pumpkin bread in oven now, rugs washed and drying, City of Madison clearning away our leaf piles (finally!) and just getting caught up!  Oh yes, and LISTS...got several going right now...grocery list for Thanksgiving, to do list for Indy trip, list for when kids are home for a week (!), list for Christmas gifts and Christmas to do...my lists never end.  Just organizing my lists is a chore itself!

My to do list for work includes thank you notes to all of the contributors and meeting with my PAC board members one on one.  Just leave me alone in my office on M, W and R and nobody will get hurt!  Playing my Christmas playlist,  drinking coffee and tea and breathing.  I'm going to avoid all Negative Nellies!

I think I will do some yoga at home today and breathe.  Honest to God, remembering to really breathe is such an eye opener.  I find myself holding my breath a lot...what am I waiting for??!!

Enjoy your day off Sissy!  YAY FOR OUR VETERANS!

yoga calm?

I really miss going to yoga. It is so peaceful and soooo good for your body and your mental health. I need to start losing weight, again, working out and enjoying life. I am proud of you. You walk, you do yoga....way more than I am doing!!!

I hate to say this....but it is true...woman are harder to work with and work for, overall. There is so much drama and back stabbing. The woman that announced that, in your case, didn't care who was there, she wanted the drama. So stupid. Keep it to yourself, and as Chris says, shut your pie hole.

Yoga sucked today...

Mondays are yoga days for me.  We have an instructor that comes in to teach about 12 of us in a conference room where we "practice" our yoga.  We mentally state our intentions and we breathe in and out...belly breaths, deep breaths and way too much downward dog for my taste.

I usually LOVE LOVE LOVE my yoga days, but today I wanted to stay curled up in child's pose (very appropriately named I might add) for the whole class.  Nothing felt good.  I had so much on my mind and I greatly disliked every minute except for the last 5, which is when we're laying flat on our backs, quiet and not moving.  The instructor comes around and rubs an amazing oil on our necks and you feel like you could just fall asleep,  But you can't, 5 minutes is up and we're back at it!

There was bad energy in the room.  One of the women in my class was in front of me and we've got bad energy right now.  Last week she LOUDLY admonished me in our break room when I threw out my empty can of soup instead of putting in recycling.  She was loud and rude and accused me of not caring for my children's future (in front of 3 co-workers).  I told her I recycle everything else, but not cans.  I was not apologetic at all as she shook her head in disgust.  Somewhere along the line of busy motherhood, de-labeling and cleaning out cans to put in recycling was just "one more thing" and it fell by the wayside.

I expected her to apologize.  She hasn't and I doubt she will.  What do you think????

So, I'm back in my office now and I put on my Christmas playlist to change my mood.  I'm eating my salad (that I made with a mix that has kale in it...did I ever tell you how much I dislike kale??) and I'm just trying to be grateful for something.

Namaste (what the heck does that mean anyway??!).  xo, H

My viewing pleasures...

Ok, first of all, I am working with a new laptop, and for the life of me, I can't get photos to post here (will figure it out later;).  Our fall line up is definitely different.

Here's what I love to watch...

1.  Homeland - awesome show on HBO (or Showtime?!) with amazing actors.

2.  Parenthood - can't imagine my Thursdays without it (this is the last season).  It never fails to make me cry or make me laugh.

3.  The Pioneer Woman - Ree is my Saturday morning pal.  I've made so much of her food because it's real and it's what my family likes to eat!

4.  The Big Bang Theory - this show just makes us laugh.

5.  Downton Abbey - when the connection makes it across the pond!  Hope it's not so soap opera'y this year...last year's season was veering in that direction.  Heard they've killed off Isis, the beautiful lab, for obvious reasons.

6.  Notre Dame football on NBC - it kind of rules our world, until yesterday, of course.

7.  Green Bay Packers football - never miss it.

One show that has failed miserably is Grey's Anatomy...tired of the stupid storylines and everyone being so incredibly unhappy all of the time!  Grow up and put that show to bed!  I'm done.

We've also been Netflix fans.  Waiting for House of Cards to begin again.  Really enjoying Foyle's War.  LOVED watching Breaking Bad last year - BEST SHOW EVER.

I know you love celebrity and reality shows.  My only show in that category is 19 Kids...they're just fascinating.  Different, but such good people raising pretty great kids.  Not what I would do, but you can't fault them.  I DVR that one and watch when I can!  Deadliest Catch is also in that category, but last year's season started losing me.  Stick to fishing!

We watched a wonderful movie last night.  Land Ho!  It's about two old men on a trip to Iceland.  It was sweet, funny and real.

finally made these

Baked Beef Enchiladas Recipe

You have told me about your yummy enchiladas for many years, and I have NEVER made them before. I found this recipe on pinterest and tried them out last Sunday when Evan was home. Can I just say first, Steve almost fell off of his chair, Evan gobbled it down and I loved it. (I am not much of a cook, I admit it).

I kept it simple for the boys, however Steve loves all foods. Beef, cheese mostly. I am going to make it again soon...so good...

Been gone for too long!

Been too too long since I've blogged.  It's going to take many posts to catch up!  So much has happened over the past year or so...BUT, I'M BACK and you're not alone in this blogging business, Sissy!  Haven't even read what you've posted, but I will.  TODAY.

One thing I've noticed as I googled "Sisters Dish"...there are a whole bunch of people using our name!!!  We were the first and they're making me mad!

Let me catch up, review and I'll be back tomorrow with an entry!  Missed this so much!

Starbucks® 2014 Advent Calendar

Love the Starbucks Advent Calendar! Not very holy, but cool. Reusable board and containers, could spray paint lids later and use for desk accessories or spices in the kitchen. $5 gift card in one of them. Otherwise good treats. I am thinking this weekend I will pick that up!
